Getting to the start
Almost everyone flies to Porto (OPO) and walks out of the city, which makes this one of the easiest long-distance starts in Europe. Metro Line E (violet) runs from the terminal into Porto: get off at Trindade and walk down through the old town, or change there onto Line D for Sao Bento. The walk begins in the Ribeira and Se quarter, about ten minutes on foot from either. No bus transfer, no taxi and no booking are needed to reach the start. Coming by rail instead, Porto Campanha is the through station for everything long-distance and is on the metro. An Andante Tour 1 (24 hours) or Tour 3 (72 hours) covers the whole intermodal Andante network, which is worth having for the airport hop and the first day if you use the metro at all. Both are sold at Andante shops, CP ticket offices that sell Andante, and Payshop agents, and neither can be topped up.
Leaving the finish
Valenca is a border crossing rather than a natural terminus, and most walkers who reach it carry straight on into Spain towards Santiago rather than going home from here. If you are stopping, Valenca station (1.4 km from the route end) is on CP's Minho line, with Regional and InterRegional trains south through Viana do Castelo to Porto Campanha, plus the Celta international service. The Celta is the awkward one, and the two accounts of it in circulation are both right about different pages. CP's main Celta page still shows the train running Porto Campanha, Nine, Viana do Castelo, Valenca, Vigo-Guixar with no disruption notice on it at all. CP also publishes a separate notice, 'Celta replacement bus service 6 April 2026 to 7 April 2027', which says that works by ADIF restrict trains 420 to 423 for that year and that the Spanish leg between Valenca and Vigo-Guixar is run by road, with no intermediate stops and the train timetable kept, so arrival times move with the traffic. Rechecked on 31 July 2026 against CP's own notice and an independent Portuguese report of the same announcement, and it is current: you will change onto a bus at Valenca. Two practical consequences. The service page is not where the disruption is published, so check the notices before you buy. And CP's notice puts conditions on the replacement bus that the train does not have, covering wheelchairs, bicycles and pets, so if any of those are travelling with you settle the last leg into Vigo before anything else. Otherwise cross the international bridge on foot into Tui, or use the coach: FlixBus runs from the Centro Coordenador de Transportes on Avenida Sa Carneiro in Valenca to Vigo, and ALSA runs Porto to Vigo. From Vigo-Guixar there are Renfe trains north to Santiago, and Vigo (VGO) and Santiago (SCQ) are the nearest Spanish airports. Returning to Porto by train and flying from OPO is usually the cheapest and simplest option, and it is the only one that gets you back to a car left at the airport.
The one-way journey
This is a linear walk that ends in another country, so a car is a liability rather than a help, and the overwhelming majority of walkers do not bring one. Public transport genuinely solves it: Porto airport at one end, a railway at the other, and a train from Valenca back to Porto Campanha in a morning. If you must drive, leave the car at Porto airport rather than anywhere on the coast. Nothing was found along the route resembling a long-stay coastal car park, no park-and-stay hotel arrangement was found in Porto, Viana do Castelo or Valenca, and Porto's on-street parking is metered short-stay. Car relocation between Porto and Valenca was not found to be offered by anyone.
If you need to leave the trail early
Bailing out is unusually easy at both ends of the walk and awkward in the middle, and it is worth knowing which stretch you are in. From Porto to about km 33 the route runs alongside metro Line B, which ends at Vila do Conde (km 30) and Povoa de Varzim (km 33), so any day here can be cut short by walking inland to a metro station and riding back into Porto. From Viana do Castelo (km 79) to Valenca the CP Minho line shadows the route closely, and CP's own beach page names halts at Areia-Darque, Afife, Ancora-Praia and Moledo as well as the stations at Viana do Castelo, Caminha and Vila Nova de Cerveira, so the escape is rarely more than a few kilometres away. Between Povoa de Varzim and Viana do Castelo there is no railway at all for roughly 47 km, and this is the stretch where an injury becomes a logistics problem. The fallback there is the intermunicipal bus network run through AITC (Autoridade Intermunicipal de Transportes do Cavado), notably line 120 Povoa de Varzim to Viana do Castelo and line 124 Viana do Castelo to Porto via the A28, or a taxi from Esposende. Note that the last useful service out of any of these places was deliberately not recorded here, because evening times change and a frozen one is worse than none: check on the day with CP, Metro do Porto or AITC.
Useful access hubs
AirportPorto Airport (Francisco Sa Carneiro)
Metro Line E (violet) runs from the terminal to Estadio do Dragao via central Porto. Get off at Trindade for the Ribeira and the Se, where the route starts, or change at Trindade onto Line D for Sao Bento. No booking, no transfer, no taxi needed. This is also the hub most walkers fly home from after taking the train back down from Valenca, and it is where a car can most realistically be left. Worth knowing that the mapped route here is the inland Coastal rather than the beach boardwalks, and it passes within about 500 m of the airport's own metro station at roughly km 13, so a car left at OPO is barely off the line of the walk.
Year-round, daily.RailAeroporto metro station (Line E)
Measured against this trail's own geometry, the route passes 0.48 km from this station at about km 13. That makes it the first real bail-out point after leaving Porto and, more usefully, the way to start walking straight off a flight or straight from a parked car without going into the city first. Note that this only holds for the inland Coastal variant, which is what is mapped here: the Senda Litoral boardwalk alternative runs about 5 km west through Matosinhos and nowhere near it.
Year-round, daily.RailPorto Campanha railway station
The through station for long-distance rail. CP Regional and InterRegional trains up the Minho line to Viana do Castelo, Caminha and Valenca start or call here, as does the Celta to Vigo-Guixar. On metro Lines A, B, C, E and F, and two stops from Sao Bento for the start.
Year-round. CP does not publish a seasonal pattern for Minho line Regional and InterRegional services, and none was found.RailPorto Sao Bento railway station
The closest station to the start: under ten minutes on foot uphill to the Se and downhill to the Ribeira. Some Minho line services begin here rather than at Campanha. Has CP automatic lockers, 24 hour maximum.
Year-round.RailPovoa de Varzim (metro Line B terminus)
Northern end of metro Line B, on the route at about km 33, and the single most useful bail-out point in the first third of the walk. Straight back into Porto on one train, covered by an Andante Tour ticket. Also an AITC bus interchange for lines 107, 120 and 124.
Year-round, daily.RailViana do Castelo railway station
The one full-service hub in the middle of the walk, about 300 m off the route at km 79. CP Intercidades, Regional and InterRegional trains south to Porto and north to Caminha and Valenca, and the AITC bus network to Esposende, Povoa de Varzim, Braga and Porto. Practical place to join or leave the trail for a shorter walk.
Year-round. AITC does not mark its main lines seasonal, but nor does it confirm winter operation on the page checked.RailCaminha railway station
On the Minho line at km 107, where the route turns inland up the river. Trains south to Viana do Castelo and Porto, north to Vila Nova de Cerveira and Valenca. Also the town where walkers heading for the standard Coastal route cross the river into Spain by boat instead.
Year-round.RailValenca railway station
About 1.4 km from the route end, and the practical finish for anyone going home from here. CP Regional and InterRegional trains south to Viana do Castelo and Porto Campanha, plus the Celta towards Vigo-Guixar. During the ADIF works recorded as running from 6 April 2026 to 7 April 2027 the Vigo leg is a road transfer from this station, with no intermediate stops.
Year-round for the Portuguese domestic trains. The cross-border leg is disrupted for the works period above; check CP before travelling. Sources and research notes · 36 sources
