Eating on the trail

Vegan food on the Cleveland Way

Plan this as two different food stretches. The moorland half from Helmsley has shops but little operator-confirmed vegan catering, so leave with an emergency dinner and contact overnight kitchens in advance. From Saltburn, Whitby and Scarborough provide much more choice. The strongest anchors are Botham's labelled vegan bakery range in Whitby and the vegan-optional dishes on YHA Boggle Hole's published menu.

Practical vegan planning

Local food worth trying

In Whitby, Botham's marks its Yorkshire ginger parkin, plum bread, ginger loaf, oat snaps and coconut and stem-ginger biscuits suitable for vegans; its lemon bun is not vegan. Whitby Brewery states that all its beers are vegan and serves pizza at its East Cliff taproom. For a seaside meal, Humble Pie 'n' Mash is a useful vegan lead for pie, mash and mushy peas, but confirm the current filling when you order.

What to buy

Use Helmsley for the moorland carry, then Saltburn, Whitby and Scarborough for larger restocks. Co-op's current national vegan range is called Co-op Plant Based, but a national catalogue does not prove stock in a small branch. Build dependable meals from bread or wraps, hummus or beans, nuts, fruit, oat milk and one cold meal that needs no kitchen. Buy preferred protein and trail snacks in the larger towns rather than expecting them in coastal village shops.

Good places on the trail

Helmsley: Hunters of Helmsley opens early and makes salads and sandwiches to order, but publishes no vegan menu, so ask at the counter. Saltburn: The Wren is listed as a fully vegan daytime cafe at the Earthbeat Centre; its limited opening pattern means checking before arranging a stop. Whitby: Botham's is the most clearly evidenced takeaway, while Sanders Yard Bistro's own site confirms vegan dishes. Whitby Brewery confirms vegan beer. Humble Pie 'n' Mash and Cranberry Swamp remain useful third-party leads, not operator-confirmed guarantees. Robin Hood's Bay: The Cove says it offers vegan options. Boggle Hole: the YHA cafe is directly on the route and its published menu marks sweet-potato and chickpea curry, pesto pasta, jacket potato, fries, salad and pizzas with vegan mozzarella as vegan or vegan-optional. Scarborough: Cappleman's publishes a separate vegan takeaway menu; pre-order and check which days it is offered.

Trail treats

Botham's vegan-labelled ginger parkin is the safest local bake to carry. At Boggle Hole, check the current YHA cake counter rather than assuming a general cake is vegan.

Where to restock

West to east, use Helmsley before the moors and Osmotherley village shop for a top-up. Carry a cold lunch and emergency dinner across the inland section unless your accommodation has confirmed both dinner and breakfast. Saltburn, Whitby and Scarborough are the reliable larger restock towns; Staithes, Runswick Bay, Robin Hood's Bay and Ravenscar should be treated as small-shop top-ups. In the opposite direction, do the main coastal shop in Scarborough or Whitby before turning inland.

Things that may not be vegan

Ask whether chips share oil or are fried in beef dripping. Check pastry, mash and mushy peas for dairy or animal fat. A vegetarian pub dish is not automatically vegan, and cask beer may use isinglass unless the brewery says otherwise.
