Eating on the trail

Vegan food on the Fishermen's Trail

Vila Nova de Milfontes, Aljezur and Lagos are the strong food towns. The route operator confirms vegan dishes at Stress Free in Milfontes and describes Roots in Aljezur as a vegan cafe and organic shop. Smaller coastal stops need supermarket food and a carried dinner. Buy plant milk and protein in the larger towns and ask about stock, lard and egg in traditional dishes.

What to expect

Vila Nova de Milfontes, Aljezur and Lagos are the strong food towns. The route operator confirms vegan dishes at Stress Free in Milfontes and describes Roots in Aljezur as a vegan cafe and organic shop. Smaller coastal stops need supermarket food and a carried dinner. Buy plant milk and protein in the larger towns and ask about stock, lard and egg in traditional dishes.

Practical vegan planning

Local food worth trying

Order açorda only after asking for no egg and vegetable stock, and migas only when made with olive oil rather than pork fat. Bread, olives, lupin beans, roast peppers and chickpea dishes are useful ordinary orders. Aljezur sweet potato is local, but its protected status does not tell you where to buy a meal; order it at a named kitchen or buy it in a shop.

What to buy

Use Vila Nova de Milfontes for the northern half, Aljezur for the central and southern coast, and Lagos at the finish. Portuguese Intermarché and Pingo Doce ranges may include tofu, seitan, plant milk and vegan yoghurt, but branch stock varies. Carry bread, cooked pulses, nuts, fruit, nut butter and a cold dinner. Rural village shops are top-ups, not specialist resupply.

Good places on the trail

Vila Nova de Milfontes: the route operator lists Stress Free as serving vegan dishes. Patio Alentejano has specific vegan walker reports, including adapted açorda, but remains directory evidence. Aljezur: the route operator describes Roots as a vegan cafe and organic shop. Moagem is listed by the regional guide as an organic vegan cafe. The Hummus Kitchen and Arte Bianca are secondary leads. Arrifana and Carrapateira have weaker directory leads, so carry food and check current menus. Vila do Bispo and Sagres have single-visitor vegan reports rather than operator policies. Lagos: All Things Dough is supported as a fully vegan bakery and may sell out, while Estudio Vegetariano is a strong vegetarian kitchen with many vegan dishes.

Trail treats

At Lagos, use the fully vegan bakery for pastel de nata or bread. Elsewhere choose fresh fruit, packaged sweets marked vegan or a dessert explicitly made without egg, dairy and honey.

Where to restock

Southbound, load in Milfontes, then make Aljezur the full reset for Arrifana, Carrapateira and Vila do Bispo. Sagres is a top-up and Lagos the finish. Northbound, reverse that plan. Carry plant milk and an emergency dinner between the towns, and favour a room or hostel with a usable kitchen.

Things that may not be vegan

Ask about meat stock in soup, pork fat in bread or migas, egg in açorda and fritters, dairy in sauces and honey. Vegetariano usually includes egg and cheese.

Useful words and questions

Portuguese: “Sou vegano/a: sem carne, peixe, marisco, ovos, laticínios nem mel.” “O caldo leva carne?” “Migas com azeite, sem banha.” “Pode usar óleo vegetal em vez de manteiga?”
