Eating on the trail

Vegan food on the GR 131 El Bastón (La Palma)

This is a self-catered mountain crossing. The official stage pages and recent walkers agree that no shop or restaurant serves the central route. Buy three to four days in Los Llanos or Tazacorte, then restock at Los Canarios for the lighthouse. The off-route Los Llanos restaurants are useful before or after the walk, not food on the Cumbre.

What to expect

This is a self-catered mountain crossing. The official stage pages and recent walkers agree that no shop or restaurant serves the central route. Buy three to four days in Los Llanos or Tazacorte, then restock at Los Canarios for the lighthouse. The off-route Los Llanos restaurants are useful before or after the walk, not food on the Cumbre.

Practical vegan planning

Local food worth trying

Papas arrugadas with red or green mojo are the simplest local order; confirm that the sauce has no dairy. Gofio, bananas, avocados, almonds, bread and tinned pulses make good carry food. Ask whether miel means palm syrup or bee honey. Potaje and escaldón require a meat- or fish-stock check.

What to buy

Los Llanos has the widest pre-walk shopping. Tazacorte has a HiperDino but its listed Sunday closure matters. At the southern end, Los Canarios has SuperDino, Spar and a bakery. Carry three to four days of food, or more for a slow itinerary: gofio, bread, nut butter, almonds, dried fruit, cooked pulses, tomatoes and one extra meal. Do not expect a central hut shop.

Good places on the trail

Los Llanos, about 4 km off-route, has several strong vegan-directory leads: La Vitamina, El Espejo and El Duende del Fuego. Confirm their weekly hours and say vegano when booking. From Tazacorte through the Caldera and Cumbre to Los Canarios, no official food outlet is published. Refugio El Pilar provides a kitchen area and water facilities, not a guaranteed shop; a reported food van is only a possible bonus. At Los Canarios, use the supermarkets and bakery. At the lighthouse, El Jardín de la Sal publishes vegetarian and gluten-free menus but no vegan menu, so request a specific dish without dairy or egg.

Trail treats

Buy almonds, bananas or a bakery item with a checked label. At the salt pans, the packaged local salt is the dependable purchase; the restaurant dessert menu still needs a vegan check.

Where to restock

Southbound, shop in Los Llanos or Tazacorte before starting and carry everything to Los Canarios, roughly 55 km after the last mapped edge-of-town shop. Buy the final day's food in Los Canarios rather than relying on the lighthouse restaurant. Northbound, reverse that plan. Sunday starts require shopping on Saturday or in Los Llanos.

Things that may not be vegan

Ask about meat or fish stock in potaje and escaldón, dairy in mojo or coffee, egg in bakery food, and whether miel is palm syrup or bee honey. Sin lactosa does not mean dairy-free.

Useful words and questions

Spanish: “Soy vegano/a: sin carne, pescado, lácteos, huevos ni miel de abeja.” “¿Lleva caldo de pescado o carne?” “¿La miel es de palma o de abeja?” “Papas arrugadas con mojo, por favor.”
