Eating on the trail

Vegan food on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path

This is a workable vegan coast, with the strongest evidence around West Angle Bay, Solva and St Davids. Wavecrest publishes a separate vegan menu, the Harbour Inn states that it serves vegan pub food, and MamGu publishes six vegan Welsh cakes. The main constraint is seasonal and lunch-only trading, so check opening and carry dinner through the remote headlands.

What to expect

This is a workable vegan coast, with the strongest evidence around West Angle Bay, Solva and St Davids. Wavecrest publishes a separate vegan menu, the Harbour Inn states that it serves vegan pub food, and MamGu publishes six vegan Welsh cakes. The main constraint is seasonal and lunch-only trading, so check opening and carry dinner through the remote headlands.

Practical vegan planning

Local food worth trying

MamGu publishes vegan Welsh cakes in traditional and flavoured versions at its St Davids and Saundersfoot shops. Laverbread is seaweed, but a traditional breakfast adds bacon, butter or egg, so order it as part of a clearly vegan plate. Cafe Mor's seaweed-led food is seasonal; ask what is vegan on the day. Choose a labelled vegan pasty rather than assuming vegetable pastry is dairy-free.

What to buy

Use Tenby or Saundersfoot before the Angle and Castlemartin coast, Solva or St Davids for the peninsula, and Fishguard or Newport for the north. Broad Haven's Londis is a documented backpacker resupply, not a specialist shop. Carry wraps, hummus or beans, nuts, fruit and a cold evening meal. Buy preferred plant milk and protein in the larger towns before remote coastal sections.

Good places on the trail

Saundersfoot: MamGu is operator-confirmed for vegan Welsh cakes; other vegan meals are directory leads. West Angle Bay: Wavecrest publishes a separate vegan menu and a seasonal opening period. Marloes: the official coast-path guide names Runwayskiln as catering for vegans. Broad Haven: Eat Out Vegan Wales records a substantial vegan range at the Galleon. Solva: the Harbour Inn's own page confirms vegan pub food, and Bay View Stores is a directory lead for hot vegan takeaway. St Davids: Grub Kitchen's current menu marks plant-based dishes and it serves lunch on seasonal days; MamGu, Pilgrims Cafe and several other venues have detailed directory listings. Newport and Fishguard have directory-listed cafes and health-food shops, useful but worth checking. At St Dogmaels, confirm the Ferry Inn's current vegan dish before relying on it.

Trail treats

MamGu's operator-labelled vegan Welsh cakes are the dependable trail treat. Choose dairy-free ice cream or sorbet only when the specific flavour and cone are confirmed vegan.

Where to restock

Clockwise from the south, shop in Tenby or Saundersfoot, then Broad Haven, Solva or St Davids, Fishguard and Newport. Anticlockwise, reverse those anchors. Buy extra before Angle, Castlemartin and the longer northern headlands. Seasonal cafes may solve lunch but not dinner, so arrange accommodation food and keep a cold meal in the pack.

Things that may not be vegan

Check lard or butter in Welsh cakes and pasties, bacon or butter with laverbread, meat stock in cawl, shared fryers at chip shops and honey in cakes. A vegetarian-labelled dish is not automatically vegan.
