Local food worth trying
A vegan pasty is now the trail's signature dish rather than a workaround: Cornish bakeries make proper plant-based versions (spiced cauliflower and onion bhaji, Thai, Mexican, or a pea-protein 'steakless' filling) in the same hand-crimped pastry as the meat original. Cornish new potatoes and samphire turn up on coastal menus in season. A Devon cream tea has an easy partial fix: order the scone with jam and a dairy-free spread rather than seeking a 'vegan cream tea' everywhere, since clotted cream itself has no real substitute. Falafel wraps, Buddha bowls and banana-blossom 'fish and chips' are common in the foodie towns rather than a chain import.
What to buy
Tesco's Plant Chef range (frozen from under £2, chilled sausage rolls, oat cream) and the Co-op's GRO range (No Chicken Kiev, Mushroom Bolognese, No Beef Mince) are the two most consistently well-rated own-brand lines; Sainsbury's Plant Pioneers is the cheapest (mince from 89p, tofu 99p). M&S's Plant Kitchen costs more but is reliably labelled and stocked even in smaller branches, useful in resort towns. Kelly's of Cornwall and Cecily's both do a vegan vanilla ice cream sold in most supermarkets, including M&S and Ocado.

Falmouth has the densest cluster: Wilder Plant-Based Thali Kitchen, Fal Falafel, Sasparella Vegan Deli, and Harbour Lights (vegan fish and chips). Penzance: Redwing Gallery Vegan Cafe. St Ives: Willy Wallers ice cream and The Cornish Bakery's vegan pasties. Mousehole: Orange Cafe Bar. Tintagel: Vega. Bude: Rosie's Kitchen. Looe: The Courtyard. Ilfracombe: Grassroots Vegetarian Café. Braunton: Riverside Cafe. Croyde: Biffen's Kitchen. Teignmouth: Nourish. Paignton: Tam's Kitchen and All Good Things Vegan. Seaton: The Terrace Art Café. Plymouth: Almanac Café and Cosmic Kitchen. Weymouth: The HiVe Café and Secret Garden Café. Lyme Regis: Tierra Kitchen.
Trail treats
Farm-made vegan ice cream is the standout find: Treleavens (sold at Trevathan Farm near St Endellion, Constantine Bay Stores, Waitrose Truro and Yaxley Stores in Polperro, all close to the path) and Roskilly's (parlours in Padstow, Port Isaac and Porthleven) both make proper dairy-free flavours rather than a token sorbet. Moomaid runs four parlours directly on the path, in St Ives, Porthtowan, Zennor and St Just. Warrens Bakery's Vegan Thai and Mexican pasties and West Cornwall Pasty Co's pea-protein 'Steakless' are sold from ordinary high-street pasty shops the length of the Cornish section, so a hot vegan pasty is rarely more than a town away.
Where to restock
Falmouth and Penzance/St Ives are the best-stocked towns before the quieter Lizard and Land's End peninsulas. Bude is the last substantial supermarket town before the remoter Tintagel/Boscastle stretch. Barnstaple and Braunton are worth stocking up in before the thinly served Exmoor coast towards Minehead. Plymouth is the obvious resupply before the South Hams' smaller villages, and Weymouth before the quieter Purbeck coast into Swanage.
Things that may not be vegan
A cream tea is the classic miss: the scone itself may be egg-washed and clotted cream has no realistic vegan substitute, so treat it as jam-on-scone rather than hunting for a 'vegan cream tea' outside the few cafes that make one properly. An independent bakery's 'vegetable pasty' is not automatically vegan. Traditional Cornish pasty pastry is sometimes still made with butter or lard even when the filling is meat-free, so it is worth asking unless it comes from a chain (Warrens Bakery, West Cornwall Pasty Co, The Cornish Bakery) that explicitly labels a pasty vegan. A pub's 'vegetable soup of the day' is often made on a chicken stock base.
