What makes accommodation planning different here

Two systems sit end to end on this route and they behave completely differently. The backbone is the Consell de Mallorca refugi network, seven island-council refuges (Son Amer, Tossals Verds, Muleta, Can Boi, Pont Roma, Coma d'en Vidal and Galatzo) with about 260 places between them. Five of those are the standard stage ends: Can Boi at Deia, Muleta above Port de Soller, Tossals Verds, Son Amer at Lluc and Pont Roma at Pollenca. All five share ONE booking route, the Consell's own availability and reservation site at seu.conselldemallorca.net/refugis, and one flat published tariff: 14 EUR per person for a dormitory bed, 9 EUR for under 16s, sheets 4.50 EUR and a towel 2 EUR if you do not carry your own. Nothing in that tariff distinguishes Mallorca residents from visitors; the only reduction published is the under-16 rate. Half board is NOT compulsory. Breakfast (5.50 EUR), lunch (13 EUR), dinner (9.50 EUR) and a packed lunch (8 EUR) are separate lines you tick when you book, so a bed on its own is normal, and Can Boi, Muleta and Pont Roma all sit within walking distance of village kitchens if you would rather eat out. The booking calendar runs about four months (roughly 130 days) ahead on a rolling basis, you pay at the point of booking, and hiker accounts agree there is no free cancellation or change. The whole network shuts for a fortnight every August, from the 1st to the 15th inclusive, reopening on the 16th. Two exceptions matter, because a walker who books four refuges through one system and assumes the fifth works the same way has no bed. Coma d'en Vidal, on the Sant Elm to Estellencs leg, is NOT in the online availability list: it is booked by phone or by email to the refuge unit, it is unstaffed, there is no meal service and you need a sleeping bag or sheets. The 2-bed room at Tossals Verds is also email-only. Galatzo sits on the Galatzo variant rather than the main line, which is why most through-walkers never see it. There is also a SECOND public network, and it is easy to miss because it looks like the same thing. IBANAT, the Balearic government's nature agency, runs its own refuges on the public estates the path crosses: Son Moragues above Valldemossa, Coma de Binifaldo and Cases de Binifaldo between Lluc and Pollenca. They are booked separately, online at caib.es/albergsfront or by phone on 971 17 76 52 or by email to [email protected], and the window is different: a maximum of 60 days ahead, released at 20:00, against the Consell's four months. They are also a different kind of shelter, unstaffed, several with no water and no electricity, and two of them are booked as a whole building rather than by the bed. Everything else on the route is ordinary Tramuntana tourist accommodation at tourist prices, plus two private hiker refuges booked direct, Son Trias at Esporles and the refugio at Finca Ses Fontanelles between Sant Elm and Estellencs. The network's own regulation sets four booking rules that the availability site does not show you, and each of them can break an itinerary. A request for a bed or a meal must be made a minimum of five days and a maximum of four months ahead, so a walker who decides on Wednesday to be at Tossals Verds on Saturday is outside the normal system and has to ring the Departament de Medi Ambient on 971 173 700 or 971 173 731, weekdays 9am to 2pm, which they will only take if places remain; the same-day answer is to turn up at the refuge and ask there. As a general rule no booking may run more than three consecutive nights, relaxed only if beds are still free after 6pm, so a refugi cannot be used as a base for a week of day walks. Dormitories can be occupied from 4pm and must be vacated before 10am the next day, which matters if you arrive early off a short stage and want your bed rather than the dining hall. And a sleeping bag or sheets are obligatory throughout the network, with bed linen for hire at the refuge if you do not carry your own. The refugi side is one route for five beds and is covered above. The village side is the opposite: each hotel is booked with its operator, and of the operator sites checked along the route almost none publishes a room rate or an opening season on its own pages, several push you into a third-party booking engine, and two (Hostal Can Mario at Valldemossa and Hostal Nadal at Soller) no longer have a working website at all. A phone call or an email is usually the only way to get a price, an opening date and an answer on a single night. Where a village property is the fallback for a full refugi, do that before you leave rather than on the day. Spring and autumn. The island council names April to June and September to November as the two busy periods, and September and October carry the heaviest refugi bookings. The refuges themselves run all year with a prior booking apart from the August fortnight, so winter walking is possible on the refugi backbone. What is not established is the village side: not one of the village hotels checked publishes its opening months, so a December to February itinerary that leans on Estellencs, Deia or Valldemossa needs each property confirmed by phone first. Camping is tightly restricted and there is no wild-camping option here. Legal camping is confined to designated IBANAT zones, where since 15 April 2025 booking, changes and cancellations must all be done online, and on this route that means one site: Sa Font Coberta beside the Lluc car park, which takes tents only. Hiker accounts describe it as the single official campsite on the trail, which matches. Treat anything else mapped as a campsite with suspicion until an operator confirms it, and note that the two camp site records at Esporles are the tent area of the Son Trias refuge, not a separate site. The refugi kitchens serve a short set menu rather than a card, and the Consell booking form takes a dietary request when you tick the dinner box. Two vegan walkers have written about using it. One reported that her request had not reached Muleta, which had bought fish, and that she was given pasta with vegetables and tomato sauce instead, so it worked out; both draw the same practical lesson, which is to email the refuge directly as well as ticking the box, and to carry a fallback meal. That is worth doing anyway: Tossals Verds and Coma d'en Vidal have no shop, and Ses Fontanelles has neither shop nor cooking facilities, so what you carry in is what you have. Soller, Esporles, Valldemossa and Pollenca are big enough for a choice of kitchens and a supermarket. Estellencs, Deia and Lluc are not, so arrange a vegan or vegetarian dinner at the point of booking rather than at 8pm. The price gap between the two systems is the largest planning lever on this trail. A refugi bed is 14 EUR per person and dinner 9.50 EUR, so bed, dinner and breakfast comes to about 29 EUR a head. The cheapest operator-published village rates found along the route were 80 EUR single and 120 EUR double at Sant Elm, and 75 EUR single and 90 EUR double at Soller, with Deia, Valldemossa and Estellencs higher again. A refugi-based itinerary costs roughly a quarter of a village-based one, which is why the refuges fill four months out. Some stages have only one viable bed, and that changes the failure mode: an unavailable refugi does not cost you a night, it breaks the itinerary. Tossals Verds is the clear case. It is deep in the mountains with nothing within walking distance, and it is the end of one stage and the start of the next, so if it is full both days have to be redrawn, usually by dropping off the ridge to the valley or by joining Soller to Lluc in one very long day. The Sant Elm to Estellencs leg is the other thin one: the Ses Fontanelles refugio is a single 12-bed room that takes a maximum of one night, and Coma d'en Vidal, the only other bed up there, is phone or email only and unstaffed, so a walker who gets neither has to reach Estellencs in one long day from Sant Elm.
